AN ILLINOIS TRACK & FIELD STAR JUST MADE HISTORY
An Illinois track & field athlete had never been named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season — until Monday.
Freshman long jumper Sophia Beckmon took home that honor after a 6.86m long jump over the weekend.
With the jump, the Oregon native shattered the conference record and equaled a U20 record set last year at the NCAA Championships.
Beckmon now sits at No. 11 on the all-time NCAA leaderboard.
She also broke a 17-year-old long jump school record during the indoor season in January.
