CUBS ROSTER MOVE: MATT MERVIS, HAYDEN WESNESKI RECALLED, KYLE HENDRICKS TO IL, GARRETT COOPER DFA

Garrett Cooper didn’t play much for the Cubs, batting .270/.341/.432 (10-for-37) in 12 games, starting nine times (six as DH, three at first base). He had a double, triple and home run.

Today, the Cubs designated Cooper for assignment.

To replace Cooper on the 26-man roster, the Cubs recalled Matt Mervis from Triple-A Iowa. Mervis has been hitting well at Iowa this year. In 18 games he is batting .288/.402/.606 (19-for-66) with six doubles and five home runs. Those numbers are a bit better than his Iowa performance last year.

As you recall, Mervis made his MLB debut with much fanfare last May. Unfortunately, he didn’t hit well, batting .167/.242/.289 (15-for-90) with three home runs and 32 strikeouts in 27 games. With the Astros starting three righthanders in the upcoming series, and the Cubs’ next opponent, the Red Sox, also righthander-heavy, I would expect Mervis to get a fair amount of time at DH over the next week or so.

Here’s wishing Mervis a better go of things the second time around. As always, we await developments.

Hayden Wesneski, who threw so well at Arizona last week, is also being recalled to replace Kyle Hendricks, who is hitting the 15-day injured list:

No word on what this injury is, yet.

I'd guess Wesneski, for now, will be used in long relief.
