RANGERS SIGN CUETO, PER REPORT

MLB Rumors: The Texas Rangers have signed pitcher Johnny Cueto to a minor league deal, per Jon Heyman on Twitter.

This is a bit out of left field, but in thinking about it, it does make a certain amount of sense. The Round Rock pitching staff is lacking in arms, particularly starting arms. Among the random guys who have made appearances for Round Rock this year we have veteran vagabonds Collin Wiles, Shaun Anderson, and Gerson Garabito, as well as organization arms who shouldn’t be in AAA Bryan Chi, Fiorencio Serrano, and Damian Mendoza.

With the 38 year old Cueto, the Rangers add someone who played under Bruce Bochy in San Francisco and was also a teammate of Chris Young in Kansas City. The 38 year old was awful in 2023 for the Miami Marlins, but put up a 3.5 bWAR season for the ChiSox in 2022 (albeit with just 5.8 Ks per 9).

Cueto gets an opportunity to get regular starts and showcase himself for teams that might be looking for veteran help, and Texas gets a well regarded veteran to help soak up some innings in Round Rock and provide depth.
