NASCAR OFFICIAL ADDRESSES BAFFLING AUSTIN CINDRIC PENALTY AT NASHVILLE

NASCAR penalized Austin Cindric during Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway for having a fan blowing on his car during the red flag.

Cindric was forced to restart at the tail end of the field at the race’s resumption. Cup Series Managing Director Brad Moran explained the penalty during a Tuesday appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, saying the fan provided “extra cooling going to the engine.”

“Teams are responsible to listen to race control during the entire event and there were instructions going out for 52 minutes of that hold on certain things we needed on pit road,” Moran said, via Kelly Crandall of RACER. “What finally did it was they had a fan there – and others had fans blowing on certain parts of their pit box. The fan we deemed blowing at the front of the [2] car, which again, we all now that’s not what we want and that’s what he went to the rear for. That’s extra cooling going to the engine.”

Austin Cindric sums up Ally 400 run: ‘Bit of a frustrating day’

Cindric, who fired off from the 10th position, was having a solid run up to that point. He rebounded nicely from the penalty, scoring a P15 finish at Nashville. Cindric remains qualified for the Cup Series playoffs by way of his win at Gateway.

“Yeah, a bit of a frustrating day,” Cindric said after the race. “We had to go to the back, lost a lot of spots early in the race, and passed a lot of cars today. I thought we had a decent Discount Tire Ford Mustang, we just never held on to any track position that we ever had, whether if it was execution errors or just getting run over there at the end of the race.

“So, yeah, I’m happy we came home with a decent finish and really happy for everyone on the 22 car – those guys have had a tough go and certainly deserve a win and to be in the playoffs. I’m proud that all three of us will be fighting for a championship later this season.”
