EVERY DALLAS MAVERICKS FREE AGENCY RUMOR

The 2023-24 season just ended, and right on the heels of the 2024 NBA Draft the Dallas Mavericks have set their sights on free agency. Teams are already allowed to negotiate with their own free agents as the NBA Finals ended, thanks to a new rule within the CBA. But teams will officially have access to the full market of free agents starting Sunday, June 30 at 5 PM CT. It’s a frenzied period of time as the league shifts officially from one season to the next.

The Dallas Mavericks have already done some of their offseason work. They selected Melvin Ajinca by moving up from the 58th pick and picking him at 51. The young wing from France will likely play overseas next season, but plans to play for the Mavericks in NBA Summer League when they tip their first game in Las Vegas on July 13.

Next, Friday morning after the draft the Mavericks made the long anticipated move of trading veteran guard Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons, shipping out a handful of second round picks with him in return for young wing Quentin Grimes. This was a move the Mavericks have reportedly tried to make many times over the last several seasons, but felt the urgency heading into free agency as they look to make room for other moves — one of those is creating the space to re-sign starting forward Derrick Jones Jr.

These few days especially create a tornado of rumors, some founded in actual strategy and truth, while others are rival organization stirring things up to leverage talent. We’ll do our best to track those rumors here as they come in. Before we get there check the complete info on where the Mavericks stand with the roster and cap logistics.

The Dallas Mavericks are interested in Klay Thompson - June 28, 1:00 PM

According to veteran NBA Reporter Marc Stein the Dallas Mavericks share mutual interest with Golden State Warriors wing Klay Thompson, should talks between the future hall of famer and his current team stall further. The Mavericks have created a bit of cap space when they traded Hardaway, which seems pointed at re-signing their own free agent in Jones. However the Mavericks are likely willing to explore all options.

To be clear, from the outside it’s hard envisioning a way the Mavericks could create the needed cap space to meet the salary expectations of Thompson. But this is obviously worth monitoring over the course of the next several days.

The Mavericks intend to keep reserve guard Dante Exum - June 28, 10:30 AM

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reports that the Mavericks have intention of holding onto Dante Exum this summer. The Australian guard, who made a return to the NBA in the 2023-24 season with the Mavericks, signed a two-year $6.1 million dollar contract with the team last offseason. The second year of his deal becomes fully guaranteed on Saturday, June 29 ahead of free agency.

GM Nico Harrison created cap space to possibly re-sign Derrick Jones Jr. - June 28, 9:08 AM

Harrison made it clear in his end of season press conference that retaining starting forward Jones was a primary goal this offseason. In trading Hardaway they look to have made the needed space to accomplish it, as ESPN’s Tim MacMahon points out. It remains to be seen what the market will be for Jones, who will get to fully cash in for the first time in his professional career.

The Mavericks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope share interest - June 27, 9:00 PM

Marc Stein shared after the draft Thursday night that the Mavericks may have interest in pursuing Denver Nuggets wing and two-time champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who continues to be one of the hottest names heading into free agency. But as Stein points out, the Mavericks would only be able to accomplish this through a sign-and-trade — something the Nuggets seem unwilling to do with a conference foe.

The Mavericks and Trail Blazers have had trade talks about Jerami Grant - June 23, 10:48 AM

NBA reporter Ian Begley shared late last week that the Mavericks were one of a handful of teams who have had introductory conversations with the Portland Trail Blazers on starting forward Jerami Grant. Little else has been reported on this, but the Mavericks have been linked to interest in the 30 year old. Grant is entering the second year of a five-year, $160 million contract.

Dallas may be interested in Tobias Harris - June 21, 2:05 PM

Ian Begley briefly mentioned the Mavericks as one of two teams who have shown interest in former Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris. The veteran forward, who turns 32 next month, spent the last five and a half seasons in Philly, has been a key part of their success and is a respected player — though his time with the Eastern Conference contender is likely ending in disappointment as his production started to wane.
