HORSE TRACKS: SEAN PAYTON LIKES THE ‘COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT’ FANS BRING TO TRAINING CAMP

The first public training camp practice session for the Denver Broncos happened yesterday and the fans definitely showed up. No doubt the presence of a first-round quarterback in Bo Nix taking his first snaps in front of fans was the huge draw. From reports yesterday, he surely didn’t disappoint.

Head Coach Sean Payton also likes having the fans around. He said afterwards that their presence brings a more competitive environment to practice.

“Anytime people are watching, I think it brings out—there’s a little bit more of a competitive environment,” Payton said. “I think that’s the case from my experience, especially when you have a good turnout like we did. When you’re practicing on that field [near the fans], I think it gets competitive.”

I love it. I love seeing fans excited and the atmosphere a bit amped. I also love that the Broncos have a first-round quarterback, because they likely won’t be getting out of this quarterback purgatory until they hit on a quarterback draft pick. The odds of hitting are much better the higher you draft them too, but even then it is a bit of a crapshoot.

However, Bo Nix is certainly looking the part so far and that’s just a few days into the install. I can’t wait to see what he’ll do in the preseason games.
