TUA TAGOVAILOA’S NEW DEAL JUST MADE BROCK PURDY’S CAMP SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR

The Miami Dolphins gave quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a four-year, $212.4 million extension that comes with $167 million guaranteed. Based on guarantees, Tua is now eighth among all NFL contracts. By the end of the day, that might change if the Green Bay Packers pay their quarterback.

The more quarterbacks who get paid, the more Brock Purdy smiles. If the San Francisco 49ers and Purdy continue to excel and win at the rate they have, it’ll be difficult for the Niners to pay Purdy less than the numbers Tua received.

The NFL is about winning. Here’s a look at the highest-paid quarterbacks—most are recent—on a per-year basis:

Joe Burrow: $55M

Trevor Lawrence: $55M

Tua Tagovailoa: $53.1M

Jared Goff: $53M

Justin Herbert: $52.5M

Lamar Jackson: $52M

Jalen Hurts: $51M

Burrow, Hurts, Jackson, and Goff have come the closest to winning the Super Bowl. Purdy has been to one and an NFC Championship in two seasons. If the Niners make another Super Bowl appearance this year, we can go ahead and slot him in the Burrow/Lawrence tier. If the 49ers win it all, no number should surprise you.

Purdy will likely get around the $60 million mark, and the uproar will be hilarious. Many—those who do not root for the 49ers— are already convinced whatever Purdy’s new deal is will set the franchise back.

That argument goes out of the window if the 49ers win a Lombardi with No. 13 under center. It’s also ignorant to assume the 49ers haven’t been preparing for whenever that day comes. There’s a reason why it’s believed this will be Deebo Samuel’s last season.
