WHERE DOES THE WASHINGTON COMMANDERS DEFENSE RANK?

Is new head coach Dan Quinn building a defense in Washington that will have his Commanders earning a high ranking? It's only the offseason, but ...

Now that the majority of free agency is completed and the draft is done, our friends at Bleacher Report released their updated defensive rankings based on last year’s performance, coaching changes, and outgoing talent.

Washington Commanders new head coach Dan Quinn is a defensive mastermind, but he is inheriting one of the league’s worst defenses. The Commanders were last in EPA, 31st in yards per play and 26th in third down percentage. They traded away defensive stars Chase Young and Montez Sweat during the season, and now this defense needs to be completely rebuilt.

To put it plainly, Quinn and his staff have a lot to do to bring this unit up to normal Quinn standards. Bleacher Report has them ranked as the 4th worst defense in the league at No. 28.

The good news, however, is that Dan Quinn is in town and ownership has been one of the biggest spenders this offseason, bringing in Franki Luvu and Bobby Wagner to play inside linebacker.

With the depth additions of Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorance Armstrong, who Quinn brought with him from Dallas, combined with Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and the newly acquired Jer’Zhan Newton give the Commanders a defensive front to build around.

The biggest hurdle for the Commanders and their defense is learning a new defensive system. It takes time for great defenses to gel and create chemistry, communication and really come together.

There is definitely talent to work with in Washington. It’s up to Dan Quinn and his staff to put the pieces together.
