JEOPARDY! PLAYERS STUMPED BY 'BEYOND BRUTAL' FINAL QUESTION - AS CHAMPION LOSES CROWN

The Final Jeopardy question on Monday's episode of Jeopardy! had the contestants and viewers at home scratching their heads.

As the show went into the Final Jeopardy, contestants Marko Saric, a math professor from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Nam Nguyen, a playwright from Mississauga, Ontario, battled it out to win the show. The third contestant, Elly Trickett, a blog and podcast editor from Danbury, Connecticut, was in the red when the last Jeopardy! round lasted, eliminating her from the game.

Marko was the reigning champion, on a two-day winning streak that earned him $26,600. And he seemed confident going into the Final Jeopardy round, which was about 20th Century Authors, as he bet $13,501 of his $14,700.

The Final Jeopardy question was: Best known for a novel, she wrote at least 6 full-length plays & collaborated with Moms Mabley on a 1931 Broadway revue. Marko guessed Sylvia Plath and Nam guessed Lorraine Hansberry, which were both wrong.

Ken announced the answer was Zora Neale Hurston, the author of the classic novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Marko dropped to $1,199 and Nam bet $1,201 of his $28,200 - making Nam the new winner as he walked away with $26,999.

Contestants weren't the only ones who were stumped, as fans took to social media to share their reactions. "...never would have got it in a million years," one fan wrote on Twitter.

"Beyond brutal Final #Jeopardy clue today. Neither of the contestants around for Final @Jeopardy got it. Neither did I. Category is 20th Century Authors," another wrote.

Others were relieved that they weren't the only ones left unsure. "I always feel vindicated when a #Jeopardy contestant makes the same wrong guess as me," a third wrote.

A fourth took to the social media site to share their happiness of getting it right when nobody on the show did. "Shoutout to myself for getting the final @Jeopardy answer correct tonight!!!" they wrote.

When the show started, all three contestants were excited to play. At the first break, Marko led with $9,000, Nam had $2,400, and Elly had $1,000.

Going into Double Jeopardy, Marko still led the game with $12,800, Nam had $5,200, and Elly was in the red with -$400. Elly sadly never got on the positive side as she finished with -$800.
