PRINCE HARRY SAYS HE'S AMONG THE 'ESTEEMED' INDIVIDUALS RECEIVING ESPN AWARD

Prince Harry is delighted to announce he’s one of the ‘esteemed’ receivers of an ESPN award for his Invictus Games contribution.

In June 2020, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, decided to take the leap and move from Britain to America. Following the relocation to California, Harry has since announced he is officially a resident of the United States. The transition proved unpopular for many vocal Brits, but such beloved US institutions like ESPN are evidently thrilled to have him there. Annually, the TV network hosts the ESPY Awards (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly), and Harry is proud to announce he’s been selected for one of this year’s MOST prestigious honors…

The awards show has become of increasing cultural importance ever since it began in 1993, with the special Pat Tillman Award for Service given to reward “esteemed” individuals “who have made significant contributions to others, echoing the legacy of former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman,” it reads on the Duke and Duchess’sofficial website.

Awarded to people who’ve excelled in showing courage and service, the award is a great honor for the 39-year-old royal to have under his belt.

He served for a decade in the British Armed Forces and is the founder of the Invictus Games Foundation, which has done so much to platform wounded, sick, and injured servicemen. Sportspeople have been competing in the games since 2014, and Harry recently returned to the UK to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

“The Games have transcended borders and impacted lives across every continent, bringing together competitors from 23 nations, with continued support and programming 365 days of the year,” a statement reads on the Sussex site.

Kate Jackson, VP, Production, ESPN, called it a privilege to award Harry for his service, highlighting that he has used his platform to “change the world” and help spread the gift of inclusivity.

ESPN has defended the decision to award Prince Harry

ESPN has defended its decision to award Harry, even in the face of a petition requesting them to “rethink” who will receive it.

The Independent reports that the petition is close to 60k signatures. However, an ESPN spokesperson gave a statement declaring it will be standing by its choice.

“While we understand not everyone will agree with all honorees selected for any award, The Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating,” they said.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 11th 2024.
